Pharmacy Distribution Center Batch Picking with Horizontal Carousels
A major pharmacy distribution center was experiencing a rapid increase in orders from their 300 affiliated retail locations. The new growth presented several challenges for the 85,000 square foot facility. The distribution facility has a 60,000 square foot warehouse that manages 18,000 SKUs spread over multiple floors using pallet rack, flow rack, and standard shelving. Using static shelving and racks, the picking areas occupied three floor levels each using 3,900 square feet of floor space. With the new horizontal carousels each of the picking areas now occupy just 1,625 square feet of floor space, a 58% Space Savings! To meet the increased demand, static shelving was replaced with 6 horizontal carousels arranged in groups of 3 carousels on 2 floor levels; each group of carousels uses a 10 position order batching station. Picking productivity has increased from 50 line items per hour using static shelving to 350 line items per hour on the first floor level and 575 line items per hour on the second floor level. The carousels are averaging a 90% faster pick rate and the labor required has for picking orders has been reduced by 72%. To pick orders, the operator first assigns a tote representing an order to a location on the batch station. With the push of a button the 3 carousels spin to continuously position parts for retrieval.
