Military Aircraft Rework Facility Stores Technical Manuals in Mobile Systems

mobile storage in technical library

technical manuals stored in less space on high density mobile systemsThe aircraft rework facility at one military air station had so many technical manuals that it was quickly running out of places to store them. Even though they were also moving to a smaller library, the aircraft rework facility decided to store their large collection of technical manuals in compact high density mobile systems, which ended up saving space and improving accessibility even in their smaller facility.

storage challenges & solutions

To make matters worse, the library had been scheduled to move into a smaller quarters that was closer to the aircraft maintenance area. This prompted their decision to install the high density mobile systems, which would save space even in their space-constrained area.

The high density mobile storage system enabled the technical library to move all of its 23,000 volumes into their new, smaller facility and still gain the work and office space that it had lacked in its prior location. The system also nearly doubled the library's storage capacity, providing room for future acquisitions and made it possible for the library to be more efficiently organized and accessible to those searching for information. The library was also able to use their existing filing system, which saved on costs and eliminated the need to re-train personnel.

The high density mobile systems increase storage capacity in a smaller footprint by eliminating the need for extra aisle space between each row of shelving. Compacted aisles can be accessed one at a time with just the turn of a crank or the push of a button. Virtually any type of storage housing can be mounted on the carriages, including new or existing shelving and cabinets. In addition, the Obama Administration's budget proposals for 2016 call for a significantly reduced federal footprint and energy and cost-efficient buildings with improved space utilization.
